November 19, 2028 — Barnes & Noble, the brick-and-mortar book chain that has been losing business to Amazon’s popular Book-to-Brain service, announced yesterday that it is filing Chapter 11 and will likely liquidate its assets.
Barnes & Noble, which has only a few remaining stores operating nationwide, was itself once a new-fangled powerhouse that drove most independent bookstores out of existence. It is now the victim of the post-literature era. Most people no longer read, but instead simply download text from Amazon into the hippocampus.
The downloads include analysis of the texts so that people understand the deeper meaning behind them. A college student can download Moby Dick into his or her brain, and write an essay on the novel in a literature class, without ever having to crack open a book.
The Book-to-Brain service is credited with largely wiping out illiteracy in most of the developing world, as well as […]

More Details on Apple’s Court Victory: “Earlier today, World of Apple was the first site by many hours (to my knowledge) to report that Apple had prevailed in its Motion to Dismiss Psystar’s Counterclaims. It is my belief that I reported this development within minutes of the Order being entered into the Court Docket. I would like to thank Edible Apple for its acknowledgment of our part in breaking this story. I really appreciated that nod. At the time I reported this news, I had promised some further commentary.
First, here are some basics for persons unfamiliar with legal proceedings. Apple had initially sued Psystar for copyright infringement; inducing others to commit copyright infringement; breach of contract; inducing others to commit breach of contract; trademark infringement; trade dress infringement; trademark dilution; and violations of state and common law unfair competition acts. Psystar responded with thirty-seven affirmative […]

Early Snow Leopard in Q1 2008?: “
It looks like Snow Leopard might be coming a bit earlier than expected if slides from Apple’s Director of Engineering of Unix Technologies, Jordan Hubbard are to be believed.’ The presentation was given at LISA ‘08 last week in San Diego.”
Originally planned for ‘about a year’ from WWDC 2008 (July), the change of schedule would be a significant bump in expections from people outside of Apple.’ While Q1 extends to the end of March, this could also indicate that we’ll see new Snow Leopard introductions at Macworld 2009 in January.’ Perhaps even new devices using the new, optimized code?
The new release schedule would also mark a shortening of the development process which had been widening over the past few releases, though Snow Leopard may be considered a somewhat smaller update due to its lack of feature additions.
We should caution that this is only […]

If you’re as into photography as I am, you’ll probably be interested to see that Google has brought the Life magazine photography archives to the internet. So far, there are about 2 million images available, but Google hopes to scan the near 10 million in total in the future. The collection dates back to the 1750’s, and 97% have never been seen by the public. You can print any of the photos out for free, as well as order high resolution, framed prints. If you’re interested in checking out the images or just bored at work and need something to look at, go to http://images.google.com/hosted/life.

According to a study [pdf] by The Children’s Digital Media Center in The Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, teenagers are using social networking sites to create idealized versions of themselves.
Researcher and study co-author, Adriana Manago, says:
“You can manifest your ideal self. You can manifest who you want to be and then try to grow into that. We’re always engaging in self-presentation; we’re always trying to put our best foot forward. Social networking sites take this to a whole new level. You can change what you look like, you can Photoshop your face, you can select only the pictures that show you in a perfect lighting. These websites intensify the ability to present yourself in a positive light and explore different aspects of your personality and how you present yourself. You can try on different things, possible identities, and explore in a way that is common for emerging adulthood. It becomes […]

How Safari 3.2’s Anti-Phishing Does, and Doesn’t, Work: “When Apple released the Safari 3.2 update last week, they didn’t just close the usual collection of security flaws; it added two new security features, common in other browsers, that Apple has been recently criticized for lacking. For the first time, Safari 3.2 includes two anti-phishing features designed to protect users from accidentally (or purposely) visiting fraudulent Web sites. In typical Apple fashion these features were essentially undocumented, but with a little investigation we’ve been able to determine how they work, and how much protection they offer Safari users.
The term ‘phishing’ initially referred to spam emails pretending to be from known sites, like your bank, designed to direct users to fraudulent Web sites that often perfectly emulated the legitimate site. The goal is to trick users into entering their login or account information, which the bad guys then use to drain […]

If you happen to be in the market for a new MacBook Pro then listen up. You can find last year’s models for sale at a huge savings off of the retail price. Why are they selling for hundreds less than they usually do? Retailers and resellers are trying to make room for the new MacBook and MacBook Pro models that were recently announced.
Now Is The Time To Buy!I have always thought that Macs were a little more expensive than they should be, but not right now! You can get an incredible deal on an awesome MacBook Pro and save yourself a lot of money. How much can you save? For example, the more expensive 15″ MacBook Pro normally retails for $2499. I’ve seen them for as little as $1544! That’s nearly a $1000! This situation kind of reminds me of my Mom telling me to wait until the […]
